Erin Snell - soprano
Erin Snell is a rising young artist in both the US and Europe, hailed as a "brilliant actress" with a "velvety," "ample" soprano voice with a thrilling top. She made her European opera debut to excellent critical acclaim as the Soprano (Mum/Sphinx/Waitress) in Mark-Anthony Turnage's Greek with the Salzburger Landestheater under the baton of Leo Hussain and the direction of Andreas Gergen.
Ms. Snell was brought to Germany as one of 15 international singers selected to work with world renowned master coaches and teachers and perform several concerts and recitals recorded for broadcast on Bavarian Radio (BR Klassik), for which she was described by the German press as a “brilliant actress” and a “highlight of the evening.” Soon thereafter, she moved to Salzburg, Austria to continue to develop her international career, filling her schedule with concerts, operatic performances, and oratorios. She made a careful and comfortable transition into Jugendlich-Dramatischer Sopran repertoire with the guidance of coaches at the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Wiener Staatsoper.
Recent seasons included Micaëla in Carmen with Utah Opera, Noémie in Cendrillon with Central City Opera, Jane Bennett in the new musical Pride and Prejudice and numerous Menotti soprano roles with Chamber Opera Chicago, Mimi in La bohème with Chicago Concert Opera, appearances with the Santa Fe Symphony, Green Bay Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic, a debut recital at the Chicago Cultural Center, and recitals at the Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute.
As a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Artist, she covered the roles of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Leslie Crosbie in the world premiere of The Letter, Refka in the American premiere of Kaija Saariaho's Adriana Mater under the direction of Peter Sellars, and was featured in extended scenes as Marguerite in Faust and Mimi in La bohème. As a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theater of Saint Louis she covered the role of Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, appeared in the world premiere of The Golden Ticket and performed several concerts throughout the Saint Louis area. Ms. Snell collaborated with such renowned coaches and pianists as Malcolm Martineau, Brian Zeger, Edith Wiens, and Iain Burnside during her residency at the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival.
Ms. Snell is an accomplished recitalist, with appearances in Vienna, Berlin, Milan, London, Salzburg, Finland, Chicago, Santa Fe, as well as a solo recital series throughout Bavaria, Germany. She has won numerous awards and scholarships including 1st Place in the Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition, both the Lynn Angel Harvey Grand Prize and the Farwell Award in the Musician’s Club of Women Competition, she was a two-time semi-finalist in the Loren Zachary Competition, a finalist in the Haugh Comic Opera Competition, and was awarded the Agnes M. Canning Award from the Santa Fe Opera.
Concert performances include the Brahms' Deutsches Requiem with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Finger Lakes Festival Choir, the Queen of Sheba in Handel's Solomon, and the soloist in Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer, Fauré Requiem, Mozart Mass in C, among others. She has been a frequent soloist at the historic Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
During her graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music, Ms. Snell won several awards including the prestigious Performer’s Certificate, the Eastman Concerto Competition, and a full tuition scholarship. She appeared with Eastman Opera Theater as Blanche in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites, The Beggar Woman in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, and La Femme, the feature role in Poulenc's one-woman opera, La Voix Humaine. She received her Bachelor of Music from The University of Illinois, where she was a Smith Scholar and three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Meier Frauenhoffer award and scholarship. Her Illinois Opera Theater credits include Le Nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Die Fledermaus (Rosalinda), Pelleas et Melisande (Melisande) and L'Elisir d'Amore (Giannetta).
She is a native of the Chicago suburb of Libertyville, IL and currently resides in Salzburg, Austria.
